Full or Part-Time RVing for Working on the Road
Hello, and happy February everyone. We have combined and improved this site by adding all the posts and pages from our Southern Ladies Adventures website. We still own the domain but will not be using it for a little while. This site we have opened to the public will eventually be posting workamping reviews and information for all the volunteer workamping positions within the state of Florida on public land areas.
Hello to my fans, if I have any left, our plans for going tiny did not work out at all. I had to return the shed as the county we live in was cracking down on all living spaces that were not just going to be outside offices, shops, or storage. Meanies!
Sadly, my mom’s health is not the best and we are going to have to buy a sticks-n-bricks here in the North Florida area. We may get back to visiting and camping in state parks eventually but it does not look good for us for now.
Now is a great time to sign-up to be a workamper in Florida. The state parks are opening back up and I have been receiving emails from quite a few of the State Parks as well as The Resource Management people who arrange for personnel in the National Parks across the country. Since they are no longer controlling the one in the Ocala National Forest I will probably not be keeping any of their emails. I tried to go onto the Volunteer Portal for the Florida State Park Systems but it wouldn’t let me sign in this week.
We are going ‘Tiny’ instead of living full-time in an RV. At least for a little while, we hope. There is nothing like being able to pack up your camper, unhook all your utilities, and hitting the road to another place to visit and explore. Don’t get me wrong I really do not like driving those big Class As nor would I enjoy being responsible for towing a travel trailer or 5th wheel. There is just something about having to figure out all the opposite backing up stuff. I just liked finally getting where we were going whether it was just to visit for a few days or to workamp for a few months. This last assignment lasted about 4 years. Don’t get me wrong I really enjoyed the park and the employees but I was ready to move onto another assignment.
Columbia County Florida Parks and Recreation Departmenthas an open and available workamping position beginning May 4, 2020. They are not sure of the exact date the park will open but it will be soon. Alligator Lake Recreation Park in Lake City Florida is a great spot to spend some time and the county offers it’s volunteers a primo camping spot with water, sewer, and electric onsite both 30 and 50 amp service on the box as well as basic cable and Comcast internet. They include extra storage in a metal 10×10 shed right next to the campsite that has a small fence, fire pit, and picnic table. They wouldn’t allow us to install a washer or dryer on the site though but you can put in another larger refrigerator in the shed. You will be given the use of a 4-Wheel Drive Gator. That’s a fun gasoline-powered cart. Very rugged and has a bed in the back for hauling all that trash to the dumpster.
Life is certainly funny these days. Well, we have finally gotten out of the full-time RVing game all together today. We were trying to renovate our old class A RV while workamping and being on vacation during this virus thing. However, when we finally got the money together and our little renovation helpers we found out that the RV had to be completely gutted and start over. Sadly, the park could not really allow us to do that even with it being closed and frankly, we didn’t have enough money to cover that kind of redo. So we have decided on a new adventure all together!
