We want to revisit our Florida Workamping book this post. The “Insiders Guide to Campground Hosting in Florida Parks“, is still a valid resource for anyone who wants to volunteer in our beautiful Florida public land areas. My mom and I really enjoyed our times at every one of our assignments. They all had their good and bad parts but all in all we enjoyed ourselves, got some stuff done for the rangers, and even learned a thing or two while we were there. We are not big hikers, kayakers or even environmentalist but we do enjoy the history and the quiet at most of the places were worked. We cannot stress how important it is to each of these public land areas that they have dependable, reliable, and hard-working volunteers. You DO NOT have to be handy with tools or equipment but a willingness to learn goes a long way with most of them.
The Basics for Newbies
Every single person that can work a minimum of 20 hours per week, follow instructions, be friendly and helpful with the public, and have a self-contained recreational vehicle of some kind can be a volunteer workamper in any of the public land areas in Florida. There are a couple of places that can only be reached by boat so you stay in tents or primitive cabins. There is even a state and a national park that has a bunkhouse for volunteers. But these are the exceptions.
Self-contained means you have the ability to take a shower, cook meals, store food, and sleep out of the elements. Most places do not care how old the camper is just that it is presentable and weather resistant. The park rangers can do very little to help you during inclement weather. Really bad weather most will empty out the park so you will have to move somewhere out of harm’s way and come back later. You can have a friend or family member drop off your camper and pick it up when your assignment is over if you do not have the means to transport it yourself. This is great for the college kids we are trying to encourage to volunteer during the summer months. Just have your parents bring over their rig and off you go getting great work experience as well as having fun in Florida’s best land areas.
