What Is Up With This Weather

Seriously people living in an RV full-time you have to really be aware of the weather. Even in Florida this winter we have had some quite chilly days here lately. Yes, I know it is nothing like what is happening around the country and we are worried about our relatives in the severely hit areas but you don’t have a lot of protection in one of these little metal boxes on wheels. Sadly, we can’t just up and leave where we are because our engine is still blown and we have committed to staying here another couple of months.

Getting Ready for Active Summer of Bad Weather

For those of us sticking around this summer in sunny Florida and are Full-Time RVers we have to be prepared to bug out at a moments notice from any public land areas we happen to be volunteering in or just camping in. County, State and National Parks, Forests and Wildlife Refuges are required to evacuate any guests and personnel staying in the area during a major weather event. Now our normal summer storms don’t count and really only those “Named” storms are really required by some authorities as worthy of closing down services within the public lands themselves. Of course, once someone declares the on-coming storm as any level of a Hurricane you are going to relocate elsewhere anyway. Heavy Class A RVs are okay to stay in during a storm so long as you not under a canopy of trees. Both those thin walls travel trailers not so much.

Spring Cleaning Up

The RV and volunteer campsite needs to have its spring cleaning done on it. Living in one spot for any length of time and you will collect a variety of things in and around your RV and site. Your RV will also need to be washed up, the roof cleaned and made ready for an annual maintenance it will need and the tires checked to make sure there are no dry-rot spots. We also like to take everything out of the storage compartments, clean the boxes up and reorganize everything back into their various storage bags, boxes, etc. and throw away things we have collected but haven’t used in over a year.

Winter in North Florida

Winter in the north Florida area has roared in like a lion this month. Not only did we have snow in portions of this area earlier this month last night we got down in the teens here at our the county park where we are currently workamping. Most people come to Florida for warmer temperatures and our more than average nice weather when the snow is blowing a blizzard in the northern, central and western states this time of year.

Anastasia Our First Two Weeks

Anastasia our first two weeks as campground hosts has been a unique experience so far. Although we have loved almost every single one of our assignments so far, this one is just a bit different from the others. The park has a very large camping area with over 130 camping sites. They are divided into 4 sections with two loops each and a bathhouse in the middle of each of these two loops. The campground hosts are all in two Volunteer Villages. One has 5 spaces and is in the back of the back. The other one has 3 spots near the park’s administrative office and in the parking area of the St. Augustine Amphitheater. The last one has a single campsite set up on the other side of the park’s admin office by itself. You don’t have to deal with campers all through the night. These Admin Volunteer campsites have to put up with the visitors at the amphitheater when they have them which can get a little congested and sometimes loud when they have concerts. They also have a weekly Farmer’s Market that draws a fairly large crowd on Saturday mornings. That is nice though because you can just walk over and pick up some fresh fruits and vegetables each week. The main volunteer village area is by the back gate which gets a lot of local residential foot traffic every single day but is a locked gate. This area also has the Washer/Dryer house where the volunteers sign-up for days to wash our clothes. They are in excellent condition. There is a small library in the little shack as well.

Working Major Events as Park Hosts

Working major events as park hosts can be really trying on your body and your required volunteer hours. Even if you are one of the volunteers just getting the park ready for the events you will end up using quite a bit of your hours. If you are working the event then even more because after the event you will more than likely be asked to help clean up afterwards. Residential Park Hosts as opposed to Campground Hosts are usually required to participate with park events. While we are at Dade Battlefield Historic State Park they had events almost every single month of various kinds and some were offered more frequently like a “Walk through the Park with the Park Ranger”. Since we don’t have any “Maintenance” skills we generally help out getting ready for the events, cleaning up after the events and sometimes we even demonstrated old time skills during the event or collected fees for the event. It was fun to learn about these types of things, demonstrate them to the visitors and dress up in costumes. If you are a history buff them volunteering at one of the historic parks may be just for you.
