Happy Holidays and Safe Travels

Happy Holidays and Safe Travels

Howdy all my fellow full-timers out there! Hope you are traveling safe and have found your camping places over the next couple of months. If you are headed to Florida we hope you have confirmed reservations as we are generally full all through the next couple of months. If you don’t have one or have a workamping assignment already set up then you might want to consider buying our book and find you a volunteer placement. Volunteering is always a great way to spend a couple of months in some of our most beautiful public land areas, help out the personnel and keep these areas available for the rest of the visiting public. You can learn new skills, meet more interesting people and contribute to our natural resources in a very real way.

Workamping at Lafayette Blue Springs SP

Workamping at Lafayette Blue Springs SP

We received an email last month we thought we would share with our readers.

Dear Florida Park Service Friend and Volunteer,

Thank you for your assistance to the Florida Park Service and the hard work, continued support and hours of dedication to caring for and protecting our resources.

My name is JoAnna Lemmon and I am the volunteer coordinator at Lafayette Blue Springs State Park located in Mayo, Florida. I am a native Floridian and a native of Lafayette County so my excitement for this park and ability to work here grows with each experience. My goal is to build a great resource of volunteers for Lafayette Blue Springs State Park so long lasting work relations and an appreciation for the park remains at the center of every project.

Colt Creek State Park Now Needing Campground Hosts

Colt Creek State Park Now Needing Campground Hosts

I just received an email from the Volunteer Coordinator at Colt Creek State Park stating that as of 2/19/2018 they are accepting volunteer applications for 1 Campground Host and 3 Resident Hosts positions from July to December of this year. The campground just opened so everything is new and should be in excellent shape. Not much maintenance to do just keeping everything clean and the trash picked up. You still need to go online and fill out the volunteer application and specify Colt Creek State Park as one of your destinations and it should go directly to the Volunteer Coordinator. Don’t forget to make a copy of the application for yourself just before you send it so that if it gets lost in the ether all you have to do is email the copy. We suggest that you follow-up the application about 7 to 10 business days after you submit it online.

New RV Camping Florida State Parks

New RV Camping Florida State Parks

If you haven’t heard there are new RV camping areas in two Florida State Parks. One just became a state park and the other just added camping to their park. Gilchrist Blue Springs State Park has been a private campground and recreational area for quite a number of years but recently the family sold it to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Parks Division. Since we have several “Blue Springs” state parks it is important to put the right name on it or you might just get a camping reservation where you are not expecting it.

Winding Down Here at Stephen Foster

Posted on April 19, 2015 By Jolene MacFadden

AntiquesVillageWhiteSpringsFL (5) (Copy)We are winding down here at Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park. The campground is looking better as we, and our fellow volunteers, slowly rake, sweep, clip and blow the leaves and trim the bushes in and around the campground area. We finally found a hand blower that I can start myself and I try to use it every day on the campsites. In the mean time another volunteer couple, Linda and J.T., are trimming the trees, bushes and along the roadways. They pay to stay on their campsite and work all day most of the week to whip the campground back into shape after a long fall and winter season. Our co-campground host couple, Dennis and Liz, are doing a great job as well as we learn to use the “automated” cleaning solutions station that was put into the storage areas of the bathhouses. This is suppose to help deliver the “right amounts” of cleaning solution with water ratios for proper cleaning and to help the park save money in the long run. We are still having to use a watered down bleach solution on the shower areas though as it stays so damp in the bathhouses between the rain and humidity. But, we do our best with what we are given and we are still receiving compliments from our fellow campers about how clean the bathhouses are and how nice the campsites are being kept.
