St Sebastian River Preserve State Park Needs Volunteers

Posted on May 17, 2014 By Jolene MacFadden

STSebastianRiverPreserveSignSt Sebastian River Preserve State Park Needs Volunteers this summer and into the early fall of this year and next. We accepted the assignment for August, September and October of 2015 but the other dates listed in the email are probably still available. We haven’t been able to travel much in the Southeast Florida Region and are looking forward to this assignment. Who knows we might even get a couple of more around this area to finish out the year and into the next one! As with any campground host or residential host positions you accept we hope to ask lots of questions, read through the material on their website and look at some of the reviews from others about the park.

Hello
I received your on-line volunteer application today. We have a volunteer camp position available at St. Sebastian River Preserve State Park in Brevard County, Florida.

We are located approximately 25 miles inland (west) of the Sebastian Inlet. The preserve totals almost 22,000 acres, and is home to many native plants and animals, including more than 74 protected species. We maintain up to 60 miles of wilderness trails for hiking, fat tire bicycle or horseback. Our eastern border is the St. Sebastian River, a great place to both kayak and fish. We also maintain six primitive camp sites.

Please see the attached document that lists the duties of our Camp Volunteers. Along with these duties our volunteers sometimes help with other projects. This year they have enjoyed assisting our Park Biologist Sam with Scrub Jay counts, and most recently nest checks for egg counts of our Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers. We work closely with our friends at CAMA as well so our volunteers will sometimes help Mark conduct bird counts at rookeries on the Indian River as well as manatee counts in the colder months. We are a Preserve with a small staff so our volunteers are a large part of our team!

We have a volunteer camp site available and I am taking reservations for May 2014 thru October 2014 and March 2015 up to/thru October 2015.

All sites have water, electric (30 & 50 amp), and sewer hook-ups. A washer and dryer are also available at the site.

If you would be interested in a volunteer camp position at our park, please contact me by e-mail with a good phone number you can be reached at.

Thank you,

Kenneth Temple
