Exploring Florida: A Volunteer Workamping Adventure

Living life spontaneously can be a fun and rewarding journey, filled with unique experiences and opportunities to learn. My recent adventure into hosting my first LIVE session on TikTok was just that—a venture filled with excitement and a touch of nervousness. During the session, I had the opportunity to share insights about my very first book and the world of volunteer workamping in the beautiful state of Florida. Here’s a brief recap of what I discussed about this fascinating lifestyle.

Introducing My First Book

The backbone of my TikTok LIVE session was my book, “The Insider’s Guide to Campground Hosting in Florida Parks.” It’s a comprehensive resource for those seeking to immerse themselves in Florida’s natural beauty by volunteering as a work camper. This guide is tailored for individuals who are intrigued by the idea of spending extended periods in Florida’s parks, while giving back through volunteer work.

Why Florida?

Florida’s temperate weather makes it a winter paradise for many, contributing to its popularity among campers during the cold months. However, landing those coveted spots in state and national parks requires understanding the system and knowing where to look, especially as a volunteer. These positions often offer benefits like electric, water, and sewer hookups, and sometimes even free laundry facilities — a big plus when you’re living out of an RV.

The Workamping Lifestyle

Volunteer workamping isn’t just about spending time in parks; it’s a chance to learn new skills and enjoy enriching life experiences. From mastering the operation of a zero-turn power mower to learning household repairs from knowledgeable park rangers, there’s always something new to discover. These roles typically require a commitment of 20 to 30 hours per week, making them perfect for those looking to blend leisure with a sense of purpose.

My Personal Experience

One memorable assignment I shared was at the Suwannee River Wilderness Trail, where we were stationed in a remote, serene environment, surrounded by nature. The river camps offered a rustic charm with basic amenities, and the community atmosphere among fellow campers was invaluable. Another assignment that stands out is our time at the historic Dade Battlefield State Park, where we participated in reenactments and educational events, further enriching our experience.

Balancing Work and Leisure

Though the work can be demanding, especially during busy seasons with tasks like cleaning bathhouses and managing campgrounds, the opportunity to relax and explore local attractions during off-hours provides a rewarding balance. It’s these moments—spending time on sunlit beaches or exploring the quaint local towns—that make the experience unforgettable.

A Call to Adventure

For those with a spirit of adventure and a love for the outdoors, volunteer workamping in Florida offers an opportunity far beyond a typical vacation. It’s a chance to contribute meaningfully to the preservation and enjoyment of these natural treasures while making lasting memories and maybe even lifelong friends.
