Becoming a full-time RVer is often seen as a dream lifestyle, full of adventure and new experiences. For author Debra Parmley, this lifestyle has become a blend of work and travel, providing unique insights and challenges, especially while maintaining her prolific writing career.
The Beginning of a Nomadic Life
Debra’s transition into RV life started in November 2020, when she and her husband decided to sell their home and take their lives on the road. With a 43-foot motorhome, they began exploring the national parks of the United States, often finding themselves surrounded by nature’s beauty instead of the crowded places they’d been warned about. This move wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision; it was a long-held dream reimagined into reality sooner than planned due to the global pandemic.
Challenges and Triumphs on the Road
One of the significant challenges Debra faced was a health issue in 2023, where she encountered a blood clot in her brain. Requiring hospitalization, this experience momentarily halted her writing pursuits. However, it also taught her the importance of making her books accessible through formats like large print and audiobooks.
Being on the road comes with unique challenges, notably the inconsistency of internet access. To overcome this, Debra and her husband invested in Starlink, which helped maintain connectivity to manage her writing and publishing business. Additionally, she embraced dictation tools to capture her thoughts while on the move, ensuring her creative process was not hindered by the bumps and jolts of travel.

Publishing Insights and Independence
Having started her career with traditional publishing methods, Debra eventually transitioned to indie publishing, attracted by the control and flexibility it offered. This switch allowed her to manage every aspect of her work, from covers to ISBNs, without the limitations imposed by traditional publishing houses. Her experience with small presses has equipped her with the knowledge to meet industry standards independently, a key to her continued success.
Building a Community and Staying Connected
Living on the road can be isolating for some, especially for authors who already spend much time in solitude. To combat this, Debra emphasizes the importance of staying connected with other authors and readers. She is involved with online author communities and has moved part of her interaction off traditional social media to platforms like Discord, creating a more private space to engage with her readers.
Advice for Aspiring Authors and RVers
For those looking to merge an on-the-go lifestyle with a writing career, Debra’s advice is invaluable. She stresses the importance of flexibility, both in terms of lifestyle and writing methods. Embracing technology, from dictation software to community-building apps, can help maintain productivity and connection. Furthermore, she highlights the importance of adapting and using setbacks as a springboard for improvement and accessibility in one’s work.
Although the RV lifestyle brings its challenges, Debra’s passion and drive showcase a blend of adventure with a fulfilling career as an indie author. Her journey underlines a key message: With preparation and adaptability, living your dream can be more than just an aspiration; it can be a rewarding reality full of learning and growth.
