O'Leno State Park

O’Leno State Park

OLeno State Park is located outside of High Springs, Florida in Alachua county located off I-75 just below Lake City, Florida. The day we visited the park there was a light breeze and a sprinkling rain. The thick overhead trees will help keep you cool during the summer. There were some volunteers along the paved road taking care of an old tree that had fallen over the road. The two camping areas were great with lots of space, trees, clean bathhouses, a picnic table, barbeque grill, water, and electricity. The day was perfect and we got to see lots of spring birds flitting around. The road leading into the first camping area is a little rough and could use some work but if you go slow you should be okay. Take a look at the gallery below for pictures from all over the park including the camping facilities.

This is one of the oldest Florida State Parks and has a rich history. There is a historical museum open to the public with artifacts from the original town of O’Leno and the CCC camp that was the start of the current site in the 1940’s. There are some cabins on the property that is available for rental by groups that include the use of the Cookhouse. The sad part is the Sante Fe River is so low right now that there has been no swimming since October 2011. Check with the Park Ranger before you go if you want to swim, canoe or kayak. We are praying for lots of rain over the next few months to return the area to its glory. This State Park has some activities every month and you can find out about these from the website as well or even the Friends of O’Leno website below.
