Lake Griffin State Park

Lake Griffin State Park is a fairly small one compared to the others. They do not have a lot of staff either. When we checked into for camping in April 2014 the Park Manager was on duty and doing the check-in procedures. It is a well-maintained and well-groomed looking park and our stay was quite enjoyable. There is a picnic area, playground area, boat dock on a canal that leads out into Lake Griffin. There are several trails in and around the park and we were only able to walk one of the trails from the camping area into the day use area. While on a hike around I came across their amphitheater area and in the playground area there was a large hawk just sitting on top of the equipment. Apparently, the park offers pontoon boat tours on the lake by request.

The Park Manager stated that he is always looking for volunteer work campers to help out especially during the late spring and summer months. Of course, if you have any kind of mechanical background you would be very welcomed. It would be a great place to volunteer as Fruitland Park is quite close to Orlando and located right next to a major highway you will have some excellent cell phone service.

The camping area has elevated areas as you drive through. This area of Florida actually has a few hills and the land that the park sits on is kind of stair-stepping. There are only 4 sites with sewers on site and the dump station is located on the lowest level of the campground on the way out. It is kind of strange to have the dump station as part of the out-going road inside of off to the side like most places. There is only 1 bath house that is quite old and could really use some updating. The sites are slightly narrow but are old enough that there are some with some nice foliage for some privacy. We stayed at one of the sites with a sewer and that was a nice change of pace from the previous ones we stayed at. Their coin-operated washers and dryers were very nice. They were all front loaders and stacked on top of each other. There is also a folding table as well as a picnic table on the side of the building should you want to sit and wait for your laundry to get finished. The showers were adequate at best. You will need to be able to walk up and down stairs even though they have wheelchair accessible sidewalk it is a little bit steep.
