Silver Springs State Park

Silver Springs State Park formerly known as Silver River State Park is an extremely nice place to spend a week or two. The campground is well-spaced out most of the sites have privacy screen with trees and bushes, water and electric. There are cabins as well. There is no swimming in the park but you can canoe, kayak and paddleboard up and down the Silver River. There is a Cracker Village that can be walked through and enjoyed on weekends you can visit the museum for only $2 per person. It is a fine little museum with exhibits of the area throughout time including Silver Springs. It is well worth the price. But it can only be visited on the weekends. During the week it is available to the local schools with science classrooms along the sidewalk. They also have volunteers dress in period pieces in the Cracker Village and give talks. Sadly, we were not there when they did this but it sounds fun.

The state park is located off State Road 35 and now has taken over Silver Springs Park. Silver Springs, Florida is really part of Ocala, Florida. There are lots of restaurants, grocery stores, camping and RV supplies all over the city. All the main roads within the park itself are paved. The shower/bathrooms are new, clean and roomy with lots of hot water. They even have washer/dryers for only $1 at each bathhouse. There are only two camping areas. They have lots of volunteers in residence as well as campground hosts. The trails are wide and well-marked. There are harder mountain bike trails leading through the forest. You can rent canoes and kayaks from the Forest Ranger Office and pick them up by the river.

There is a large playground area as well as a nice picnic area in the center of the park. The equipment is well maintained. The road leading into the park is fairly long and winding but that is fairly normal for most parks. I guess they want to keep you weaving around the bends to force drivers to go slowly and not run over any of the wildlife. We walked on several of the trails including the ones behind and around the campground areas. They are well marked and maintained as well. It is a little hard to get reservations on short notice in the camping area so plan ahead. During the week seems to be no major problems. Big rigs are certainly welcomed here as there are lots of pull-through sites.
